When and How to Wean a Bottle Calf
Updated: November 4, 2026
Most bottle calves are ready at 6–8 weeks, but the real signal is how much calf starter they eat. Wean gradually and change one thing at a time.
When
Most bottle calves are ready at 6–8 weeks, once they eat about 1 kg (2 lb) of calf starter a day for three days in a row and drink water well.
How
Cut back gradually over about a week: drop to one bottle a day, then stop. Don't change pens, feed and company all at once; spread big changes out.
- Keep starter and water in front of the calf at all times.
- Expect a few days of slower growth. A big drop or a sick calf means it went too fast.
- Introduce good hay gradually after weaning.
