Body Condition Scoring for Cattle (1–9 Scale)

Updated: November 4, 2026

Body condition scoring is a quick hands-on check of whether your cattle are too thin, just right or too fat, and it costs nothing.

The beef scale (1–9)

1–3 thin: ribs, hips and spine easy to see. 4 borderline: a few ribs visible. 5–6 ideal for most cows: ribs felt but not seen, smooth look. 7–9 fat: rounded, fat around the tailhead and brisket.

How to check

Look from the side and from behind, then feel the ribs, the spine and the tailhead. Score the same way each time and note it in Cowpanion as a note or health check-up.
